Navistar International trucks recalled for inadequate back-up light visibility
Navistar is recalling certain International trucks (2000-2024 model years) for inadequate back-up light visibility when reversing. Low visibility may not alert other drivers, increasing crash risk. Dealers will replace rear stop/turn signal lights free of charge.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a vehicle safety component (back-up lighting) where inadequate visibility could increase crash risk. However, no injuries, illnesses, or actual crashes have been reported in the source text, and the risk is theoretical. Under the rubric, this qualifies as a risk-of-harm product where injury has not been reported, resulting in a High severity score.
Plain-English summary
Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain International trucks with model years spanning from 2000 to 2024, including the 9100i, 9200i, 8600, 9400i, ProStar, LoneStar, and other models. These vehicles have back-up lights that offer low visibility when in reverse and bobtail mode (operating without a trailer). The vehicles lack additional unobstructed back-up lights, failing to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, which establishes requirements for lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment.
Low visibility or obstructed back-up lights may not adequately alert other drivers that the vehicle is backing up. This increases the risk of a crash.
Owners of affected vehicles should contact Navistar's customer service at 1-800-448-7825 to schedule a replacement of their rear stop/turn signal lights. Owner notification letters were mailed May 6, 2024. The repair is performed at no cost to vehicle owners. For more information, owners may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
