Chevrolet 4500HD, 5500HD, 6500HD trucks recalled for fire risk in brake system

General Motors recalls 2019-2023 Chevrolet medium-duty trucks (4500HD, 5500HD, 6500HD) for a brake pressure sensor defect that can cause electrical fire risk. Owners must park outside until repairs are complete.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a defect in a critical brake system component that creates a risk of vehicle fire, but no injuries or property damage have been reported. The hazard qualifies as a risk-of-harm product without reported incidents.

Plain-English summary

General Motors is recalling approximately 40,428 Chevrolet 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD medium-duty trucks from model years 2019 through 2023. The brake pressure sensor assembly may leak hydraulic fluid into the brake pressure switch, causing an electrical short-circuit.

An electrical short in the brake pressure switch can overheat the circuit and increase the risk of fire while the vehicle is driving or parked. Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete.

Dealers will replace the master cylinder pressure sensor and inspect the wire harness, replacing it if necessary, at no cost to the vehicle owner. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 11, 2023. Owners can contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
