Navistar is recalling 2023 International and IC Bus commercial vehicles because the engine control module may short-circuit, causing the engine to stall unexpectedly. This defect increases the risk of crashes.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a vehicle defect (ECM short-circuit causing unexpected engine stall) that creates risk of crashes and serious injury. However, the source reports no documented injuries, deaths, or actual crash incidents—the hazard is theoretical. Per the rubric, theoretical hazards with no reported injury are scored at most High (3).
Plain-English summary
Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain 2023 International LT, Lonestar, MV, HV, and HX commercial trucks, as well as IC Bus TC buses. The recall affects an estimated 283 vehicles. The engine control module (ECM) in these vehicles may develop an internal electrical short-circuit.
If the ECM short-circuits, it can cause the engine to stall unexpectedly while driving. An unexpected engine stall increases the risk of a crash and potential injury to occupants and others on the road.
Owners were notified by mail beginning September 26, 2022. The remedy is replacement of the engine control module. Owners should contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 to schedule the replacement. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
