What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a risk-of-harm scenario where critical safety displays (speedometer and neutral indicator) may not appear at startup in freezing conditions, increasing crash risk. No injuries or crashes have been reported, which places this within the High severity category per the rubric criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Harley-Davidson Motor Company is recalling certain 2021 Pan America 1250S (RA1250S), Pan America 1250 (RA1250), and Sportster S (RH1250S) motorcycles. The instrument cluster module may fail to display the speedometer and neutral indicator when the motorcycle starts in temperatures at or below freezing.
The missing speedometer and neutral indicator increase the risk of a crash, as riders cannot see critical information needed for safe operation. This defect fails to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 123, which requires that motorcycle controls and displays function properly.
Approximately 3,917 motorcycles are affected by this recall. Owner notification letters were mailed on February 8, 2022.
