Mazda is recalling certain 2020-2021 CX-9 vehicles with 60/40 split bench second-row seats. The left-side second-row seat may unexpectedly slide forward during a crash, increasing injury risk to occupants.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural defect in a safety-critical seating component that poses an injury risk during crashes. Since no injuries or deaths have been reported and the hazard represents potential rather than confirmed harm, it meets the High severity criteria for risk-of-harm products without reported incidents.

Plain-English summary

Mazda North American Operations is recalling certain 2020 and 2021 Mazda CX-9 vehicles equipped with 60/40 split bench second-row seats. The left-side second-row seat may unexpectedly slide forward during a crash, violating Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 210 regarding seat belt assembly anchorages.

When a seat slides forward during a crash, it can transfer excessive force onto a belted occupant, increasing their risk of injury.

The recall affects approximately 8,648 vehicles from model years 2020 and 2021. Owners were notified by letter mailed on November 4, 2021.

Owners should contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 (Option 4) to schedule a free replacement of the affected second-row seat internal parts.
