What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the steering knuckle may separate, leading to a loss of steering control and an increased risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects.
Plain-English summary
Mazda North American Operations is recalling certain model year 2016 CX-3, 2013-2014 Mazda2, 2014-2016 CX-5, and 2013-2015 CX-9 vehicles. The recall covers vehicles manufactured between specific dates in 2012 and 2015, including CX-3 units built from June 1, 2015, to December 2, 2015, and CX-9 units built from December 6, 2012, to July 31, 2015.
The defect involves the lower mounting nuts and bolts that attach the front strut assembly to the steering knuckle. These components may loosen, which allows the steering knuckle to separate from the strut assembly. If this separation occurs, it can cause a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the lower mounting nuts and bolts that secure the front strut assembly to the steering knuckle. If the bolts are loose, they will be replaced and correctly tightened free of charge. The recall was expected to begin on May 20, 2016. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
