Mazda Recalls CX-7 Vehicles Due to Front Suspension Corrosion Risk
Mazda is recalling 2007-2012 CX-7 vehicles because water and salt may cause front suspension ball joints to corrode and separate, potentially leading to a loss of steering control.
What this means for you
Our assessment, not the agency’s: severity 4/5 (Severe).
The hazard poses a serious risk of illness, injury, or structural failure. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (suspension component separation) that can lead to a loss of steering control and a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Mazda North American Operations is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 Mazda CX-7 vehicles manufactured between February 14, 2006, and May 9, 2012. The recall involves approximately 190,102 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, water may enter the front suspension ball joint fittings. If this water is contaminated with salt, such as from driving on snowy roads that have been treated, the ball joint may corrode and separate from the lower control arm.
This defect can result in a loss of steering control, which increases the risk of a crash. No specific injuries or fatalities are reported in the source text, but the potential for loss of vehicle control is a significant safety hazard.
Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace both front lower control arms free of charge. As a priority, Mazda will first address all affected 2007-2008 vehicles as well as 2009-2011 vehicles currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. The remaining vehicles will be addressed as parts are available. The recall began September 20, 2017. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
