2022 IC Bus school buses lack required emergency exit windows

Navistar is recalling certain 2014–2022 IC Bus school buses that lack adequate emergency exit windows required by federal safety standards. The deficiency could delay passenger evacuation during emergencies.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a structural safety defect affecting emergency egress with clear risk of passenger harm during evacuation. However, no actual injuries or illnesses have been reported, so per the rubric, the score is High (3) rather than Severe (4).

Plain-English summary

Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain 2014 IC Bus CE, 2019 IC Bus CE, and 2022 IC Bus CESB school buses. These buses do not have enough emergency exit windows and fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 217, which sets requirements for bus emergency exits and window retention and release.

A lack of adequate emergency exits can delay passengers from exiting the vehicle during an emergency, increasing their risk of injury.

Dealers will install two additional emergency exit windows at no charge to owners. Navistar began mailing owner notification letters in August 2021. Owners can contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for more information.
