Plain-English summary
Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain 2016-2017 IC Bus CE and RE school buses. The CE school buses were manufactured between June 15, 2015, and May 20, 2016, while the RE school buses were manufactured between June 18, 2015, and April 27, 2016. A total of 1,787 vehicles are affected by this recall.
These buses may have been manufactured without reflective outline tape around the emergency exit roof hatches. This defect causes the vehicles to fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 217, which governs bus emergency exits and window retention and release. The absence of the reflective tape may reduce the conspicuity of the emergency exit roof hatches, potentially reducing the ability of emergency personnel to identify and gain access to the hatches during an emergency. This could increase the risk of personal injury or death to passengers.
Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will install the reflective tape around the roof hatch free of charge. The recall began on July 18, 2016. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 for more information. Navistar's number for this recall is 16505. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
