Navistar Recalls 2012-2013 IC Bus School Buses Due to Roof Hatch Issue
Navistar is recalling specific 2012 and 2013 IC Bus school buses because roof escape hatches may be too difficult to open in an emergency.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (roof escape hatches) that may hinder emergency egress, posing a risk of injury to occupants, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects and significant injury reports.
Plain-English summary
Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2012 and 2013 IC CE, RE, and BE school buses manufactured between April 1, 2011, and March 31, 2012. These vehicles are equipped with Prolo roof escape hatches. The recall affects 3,491 vehicles.
The defect involves increased friction between the rear plate assemblies and the nylon rear pop-up support. This friction may cause the opening force of the roof hatches to exceed federal standard requirements. Consequently, the hatches fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 217, which governs bus emergency exits and window retention and release.
In the event of an emergency, the difficulty in opening the hatches may hinder egress from the bus, potentially resulting in injury to vehicle occupants. Navistar will notify owners, and Specialty Manufacturing, Inc. (SMI) will provide service kits and repair instructions to dealers and owners free of charge. The safety recall began on August 3, 2012. Owners may contact Navistar at 1-260-461-1890 or SMI at 1-800-951-7867.
