What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a safety-critical component (seat belts) that may be unusable, increasing the risk of injury in a crash, but the source text does not report any specific injuries or fatalities.
Plain-English summary
Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is recalling certain 2015-2016 D4000, 2015-2020 D4500 and D4505, 2016-2020 J4500, 2018 J3500, and 2017 D4005 buses. The recall involves 641 vehicles.
The seat belts on these vehicles may not extend from the retracted position, which renders the seat belt unusable. As a result, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection," and number 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies." The inability to use the seat belt may increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
MCI will notify affected owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the seat belts, as necessary, free of charge. MCI issued an interim notification to owners on June 26, 2020, and the recall began on January 13, 2021. Owners may contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947. MCI's number for this recall is SB 482. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
