What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (suspension/axle) that increases the risk of a crash or injury, but the source text does not report any actual deaths or serious injuries, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is recalling certain 2018-2020 D4500 and D4505 coaches equipped with an optional steerable tag axle. The recall involves 276 vehicles where the tag axle mounting block clamps that retain the tie rod may slip. This slipping can result in the tag axle being out of alignment.
If the tag axle becomes misaligned with the front of the vehicle, the rear of the vehicle may strike other vehicles or pedestrians, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. The recall began on February 19, 2020.
MCI will notify owners, and dealers will replace the block clamps and retorque the fasteners free of charge. Owners may contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
