MCI Recalls Diesel Buses Due to Fuel Tube Fire Risk

Motor Coach Industries is recalling 1,125 diesel buses because fuel tubes may crack and leak, increasing the risk of fire.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in the fuel system that can lead to a high-pressure leak and fire, meeting the rubric criteria for a structural vehicle defect or significant injury/property-damage risk.

Plain-English summary

Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is recalling certain 2019-2022 model year D4000 ISTV, D4500, D4520, D4505, D4005, D45CRTLE, and J4500 vehicles equipped with specific Cummins X12 diesel engines. The recall affects 1,125 vehicles in total.

The defect involves fuel tubes located between the fuel rail and the injectors for cylinders four, five, and six. These tubes may fatigue and crack, resulting in a high-pressure fuel leak. If a leak occurs in the presence of an ignition source, it can increase the risk of a fire.

Owners should contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947 or a Cummins dealer to schedule a repair. For engines with 75 miles or less, dealers will install vibration isolators on the existing fuel tubes. For engines with more than 75 miles, dealers will replace the fuel tubes with new ones that include vibration isolators. Repairs are performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 11, 2022.
