NHTSA safety advisory
Park this vehicle outside
NHTSA advises parking it away from buildings and other vehicles until the repair is done — the risk exists even when the vehicle is switched off.
This is the agency’s own advisory, not our assessment. Contact the manufacturer or a dealer, and see the official NHTSA notice for the current guidance.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (brake system) that explicitly increases the risk of a fire, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.
Plain-English summary
Nissan North America, Inc. is recalling approximately 391,479 vehicles, including 2015-2018 Nissan Murano, 2016-2018 Nissan Maxima, 2017-2019 Nissan Pathfinder, and 2017-2019 Infiniti QX60 models. This recall addresses vehicles that were previously recalled under number 18V-601 but remained unrepaired or were inspected and determined not to need repair, as well as an expanded population of affected vehicles.
The defect involves the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) actuator pumps, which may allow brake fluid to leak onto an internal circuit board. This leak can result in an electrical short, increasing the risk of a fire.
Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ABS actuator free of charge. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available, currently expected during summer 2020. If the ABS warning light remains illuminated for more than 10 seconds after engine start-up, owners are advised to park the vehicle outdoors away from other vehicles or structures and not to drive it.
