Terex Recalls 2012-2017 Digger Derricks and Aerial Devices for Engine Control Defect

Terex is recalling 444 Digger Derricks and Aerial Devices from 2012-2017 because a hood switch may prevent remote engine shutdown, increasing injury risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria for potential injury without confirmed incidents.

Plain-English summary

Terex South Dakota, Inc. is recalling certain 2012-2017 Digger Derricks and Aerial Devices, including models C4000, C5000, C6000, C7000, General, HR, OM, RM, RMX, SC, SCM, TC, TCX, TL, TM, and XT. These vehicles are built on Freightliner chassis with SmartPlex engine controls. The recall affects 444 units.

The vehicles have a switch to monitor whether the hood is open. If the switch incorrectly indicates that the hood is open, the vehicle software may disable the Aerial or Digger Derrick remote engine control functions. If the hood switch prevents the remote engine controls from shutting the vehicle engine down in the event of a hydraulic issue, it may increase the risk of an injury.

Terex South Dakota will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the vehicles to only disable the engine start function if the switch indicates that the hood is open, free of charge. The recall began on June 28, 2017. Owners may contact TSD Customer Service Department at 1-800-982-8975. TSD's number for this recall is SN659. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
