Navistar Recalls IC Bus School Buses Due to Heater Hose Defect
Navistar is recalling specific IC Bus school buses because a heater hose may split, leaking hot coolant into the driver's foot area and increasing the risk of burns or crashes.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk of burn injury or crash due to a structural defect in the cooling system, but the source text does not report any actual injuries or fatalities, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2011-2016 IC Bus CE school buses and 2012-2015 IC Bus BE school buses. The recall covers vehicles manufactured between November 3, 2009, and February 26, 2015, for the CE models, and between August 2, 2010, and September 15, 2014, for the BE models. The affected vehicles are equipped with a water shutoff valve located inside, forward of the driver heater, featuring a formed heater hose.
Over time, this formed heater hose may fatigue and split. If this occurs, hot, pressurized engine coolant fluid may leak into the driver's foot area. This condition creates an increased risk of burn injury to the operator or a crash.
Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the formed heater hose with a more robust one at no charge. The recall began on January 4, 2017. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
