MCI Recalls J4500 Motor Coaches Due to Brake Hose Wear Risk

Motor Coach Industries is recalling 2013-2015 MCI J4500 motor coaches because a brake hose may rub against the tire or control arm, potentially causing a loss of braking power.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (brake hose wear) that increases the risk of a crash, but the source text does not report any deaths or serious injuries, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 MCI J4500 motor coaches manufactured between July 83, 2013, and December 19, 2014. These vehicles are equipped with ZF axles and independent front suspension. The recall involves 147 units.

The defect involves the routing and clamping of the steering axle brake hose to the steering axle brake chamber. This configuration may allow the brake hose to rub against the front tire or contact and rub the upper control arm. This rubbing may wear a hole into the brake hose, resulting in a loss of air pressure in the front brake chamber. This condition reduces brake performance and increases the risk of a crash.
