General Motors is recalling specific 2012 Buick Verano, Chevrolet Cruze, Sonic, and Camaro vehicles because the driver's air bag may fail to deploy in a crash.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the driver's air bag may fail to deploy, increasing the risk of injury in a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury reports or structural defects.
Plain-English summary
General Motors LLC is recalling certain model year 2012 Buick Verano, Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Sonic, and Chevrolet Camaro vehicles. The recall covers vehicles manufactured between December 2011 and August 2012, depending on the specific model. The defect involves a shorting bar in the driver side frontal air bag that may intermittently contact the air bag terminals.
If the shorting bar and terminals are in contact at the time of a crash that requires the driver's frontal air bag to deploy, the air bag will not deploy. This failure increases the driver's risk of injury. This recall is an expansion of previous recalls 12V-522 and 13V-023.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering wheel air bag coil free of charge. The recall began on July 25, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact GM at 1-800-222-1020, and Buick owners may contact GM at 1-800-521-7300. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
