Peterbilt Trucks Recalled for Side Air Bag Warning Light Defect

PACCAR is recalling 2010-2015 Peterbilt trucks because a blown fuse can disable the side air bag without triggering a warning light, increasing injury risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a safety system failure (side air bag) that increases the risk of injury in a rollover, but no specific injuries or fatalities are reported in the source text, fitting the 'High' criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

PACCAR Incorporated is recalling certain model year 2010-2015 Peterbilt 579, 388, 384, 367, 365, 348, and 337 trucks manufactured between October 30, 2009, and May 21, 2014. The recall involves approximately 1,705 vehicles.

In the affected vehicles, if power is interrupted to the seat electronic control unit (ECU), such as when the fuse for that circuit blows, the side air bag is disabled. However, there is no warning lamp indicator to notify the operator of this malfunction. Without a warning of the problem, the driver may continue to operate the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury from the side air bag not deploying in the event of a rollover.

PACCAR will notify owners, and dealers will install a new electrical harness to correct the problem free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Peterbilt customer service at 1-940-591-4220. Paccar's number for this recall is 514-F. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
