Hitchhiker Discover America RVs Recalled for Brake Actuator Defect

Nu Wa Industries is recalling certain 2012 Hitchhiker Discover America RVs because improperly heat-treated brake actuator pumps may fail, increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where brake actuator failure can result in the loss of braking effort, increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury/property-damage reports or structural defects.

Plain-English summary

Nu Wa Industries, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2012 Hitchhiker Discover America recreation vehicles manufactured between October 10, 2011, and January 30, 2012. These vehicles are equipped with electric/hydraulic (E/H) brake actuator pumps that may not have been properly heat treated.

This condition can cause premature wear of critical components in the pumps, potentially rendering the unit inoperable. The E/H brake actuator provides braking power to the trailer brakes; failure of the actuator can result in the loss of braking effort by the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash.

Nu Wa will notify owners, and Dexter Axle Company will replace the actuators free of charge. The safety recall began on March 7, 2012. Owners may contact Nu Wa Industries at 1-800-835-0676 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
