The recall addresses a defect in the refrigerators' safety mechanisms. These units contain a sensing algorithm or thermal switch designed to shut off power when high temperatures are detected, specifically to prevent fires caused by potential hydrogen gas leaks. However, the response times of these devices are not sufficient to stop power in time to prevent a fire.
Owners will be instructed to contact Norcold dealers to receive the remedy free of charge. The safety recall began in January 2011.
