Carriage Fifth Wheel Trailers Recalled for Refrigerator Fire Risk

Carriage is recalling certain fifth wheel trailers equipped with 1200-series Norcold refrigerators because the safety shut-off mechanism may not prevent a fire from a hydrogen gas leak.

Plain-English summary

Carriage, Inc. is recalling certain fifth wheel trailers equipped with 1200-series Norcold refrigerators. The affected models include Carriage Royals, Carriage, CAMEO, Carri-Lite, C-Force, and Carriage LS manufactured between 1997 and 2011.

The refrigerators contain a sensing algorithm or thermal switch designed to shut off power when high temperatures are detected to prevent a potential fire. However, the response times of these devices are not sufficient to stop power in time to prevent a fire caused by a possible hydrogen gas leak.

Carriage is working with Norcold to identify and notify affected owners. Owners will be instructed to contact Norcold dealers to receive the remedy free of charge. The safety recall began on March 9, 2011. Owners may contact Norcold at 1-800-767-9101 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
