What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (brake actuator) where failure can result in the loss of braking effort and an increased risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Peterson Industries, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2012 Excel Limited recreational vehicles equipped with electric/hydraulic (E/H) brake actuator pumps. The recall involves 16 affected units.
Some of these pumps may not have been properly heat treated. This condition can cause premature wear of critical components, rendering the unit inoperable. Since the E/H brake actuator provides braking power to the trailer brakes, failure can result in the loss of braking effort by the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash.
Peterson will notify owners, and dealers will replace the actuators free of charge. The safety recall began on June 1, 2012. Owners may contact Peterson Industries at 1-800-368-3759 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
