Newmar Recalls 2012 Fifth Wheel Trailers Due to Brake Actuator Defect

Newmar is recalling two 2012 fifth wheel trailer models because improperly heat-treated brake actuators may fail, increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (brake actuator failure) that can result in loss of braking effort and increased crash risk, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Newmar Corporation is recalling one 2012 Kountry Aire FW and one 2012 Kountry Star FW fifth wheel trailer. These vehicles are equipped with Dexter electric/hydraulic (E/H) brake actuator pumps that may not have been properly heat treated.

This condition can cause premature wear of critical components in the pumps, rendering the unit inoperable. Because the E/H brake actuator provides braking power to the trailer brakes, failure of the actuator can result in the loss of braking effort by the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash.

Newmar will notify owners, and Dexter will replace the actuators free of charge. Newmar has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Newmar at 1-574-773-2007 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
