Mercedes-Benz Recalls Sprinter Vans for Defective Seat Belts
Mercedes-Benz is recalling certain 2008-2011 Sprinter vans because second-row seat belts may not meet federal safety standards, increasing injury risk in crashes.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (seat belts) that may fail to restrain occupants in a crash, explicitly increasing the risk of injury or death, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects and significant injury reports.
Plain-English summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Dodge, Mercedes-Benz, and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vehicles. The recall affects vehicles equipped with an optional three-seat bench in the passenger compartment. The total number of affected vehicles is 3,437.
The second-row seat belts in these vehicles may not meet the minimum requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 and Standard 209. Specifically, the safety belts may not lock as required, and the assembly loop may not perform to minimum force requirements. In the event of a crash, these defects may prevent the seat belts from properly restraining occupants, increasing the risk of injury or death.
Mercedes-Benz will inspect and replace any seat belt assemblies that do not meet the requirements free of charge. The safety recall began on July 15, 2011. Owners may contact Mercedes-Benz at 843-695-5000 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
