Plain-English summary
Grace Metal Products, Inc. has announced a voluntary repair program for approximately 67,000 Swyngomatic Converta Cradles manufactured between September 1979 and July 1980. The recall addresses a defect where the cradle's masonite bottom board may lack sufficient support, potentially allowing infants to fall out if the board is not positioned properly during assembly.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is aware of 36 instances where the bottom collapsed, resulting in children falling to the ground. In at least 13 of these incidents, infants sustained injuries consisting of bruises and cuts. The affected products were sold nationwide in retail stores and through catalogs by Sears, Roebuck and Co., J.C. Penney Company, and Montgomery Ward under various trade names, including Swyngomatic, Toddle Time, and Wynd-A-Matic.
Consumers owning affected cradles should contact Grace Metal Products to receive a free support kit containing two steel support rods, fasteners, and assembly instructions. Until the support rods are received and installed, consumers are cautioned against using the affected cradles.
