Graco is recalling about 100,000 Contempo highchairs because they may collapse if not fully locked, posing an injury risk to children.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (highchair collapse) where injury has been reported (bruise), fitting the 'High' severity criteria for products where injury has not yet been reported as severe or fatal, but a hazard exists.
Plain-English summary
Graco Children's Products Inc. is recalling approximately 100,000 Contempo highchairs due to a collapse hazard. The highchairs feature an "A" frame design and can collapse if they are not fully opened and locked into place from the storage position before use. If a collapse occurs, a child occupying the highchair can be injured.
The firm has received 18 reports of the highchair collapsing, including one report of an 18-month-old suffering a bruise on his foot. Additionally, there have been two reports of the highchair collapsing outside of the United States. The recalled units were manufactured from October 27, 2005, through November 22, 2006, and sold at retailers including Babies "R" Us, Toys "R" Us, Target, and Wal-Mart for between $100 and $130.
Consumers should contact Graco to obtain instructions for a free repair kit. Until the repair kit is received, consumers can continue to use the highchair but must ensure it is fully opened until a "click" is heard, indicating the hub is locked into place. Model numbers included in the recall begin with 3800, 3803, 3804, 3805, 3810, and 3811.
