Cosco Recalls Options 5 High Chairs Due to Fall Risk
Cosco is recalling about one million Options 5 High Chairs because seats can separate from the frame or slip, causing children to fall. Consumers should stop using these chairs immediately.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect in a high chair that allows seats to separate or slip, resulting in reported injuries including concussions and head trauma. This aligns with the rubric criterion for 'structural vehicle defect' (analogous structural defect in consumer product) or 'significant injury reports' which warrants a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Cosco Inc. is recalling approximately one million Options 5 High Chairs manufactured between December 1, 1997, and August 11, 2000. The recall was initiated because the chairs' seats can separate from the frame in the recline position or slip to the lowest position in the upright setting. Additionally, some seats were sold with a metal restraint anchor that can slip through the back of the seat, allowing a child to fall to the ground.
Cosco and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have received 168 reports of incidents involving the high chairs' seats or restraints. These reports include 57 injury reports, primarily to the head and face. Specific injuries reported include slight concussions, monitoring for head injuries, swollen eyes, bloody noses and lips, and bumps and bruises.
The recalled chairs can be identified by model number 03-286 and a four-digit manufacture date located on the bottom of the seat. The chairs were sold nationwide at mass merchandise, juvenile products, and major discount department stores for approximately $40 to $50. Consumers should stop using these high chairs immediately. Repair kits are no longer available, and consumers are advised to discard or destroy the products. For more information, consumers can contact Cosco at (800) 221-6736.
