Crosman BB Pistols Recalled Due to Potential Safety Malfunction
Crosman is recalling approximately 25,000 model 454 BB pistols because an improper dimension may allow the gun to discharge with the safety engaged.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (firearm/air gun) where the safety mechanism may fail, but the source text does not report any specific injuries or illnesses.
Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Crosman Arms are recalling approximately 25,000 Crosman model 454, 16-shot, semi-automatic .177-caliber CO2 powered BB pistols. These pistols were manufactured and distributed nationwide during 1977 for recreational shooting.
The recall is due to an improper dimension on a receiver cover in a portion of the units, which raises the possibility that the pistol may discharge when the trigger is pulled with the safety engaged. Suspect pistols can be identified by the first three digits of the serial number being 477, 577, 677, 777, or 877. The serial number is located on the left side of the pistol just below the name Crosman. Pistols with these serial numbers but with an "R" stamped on the right-hand side of the casting under the grip or below the barrel on the front of the receiver have been inspected and do not contain the possible malfunction.
Owners of affected pistols are requested to take the pistol to the nearest authorized service center listed on the brochure included with the purchase. Owners may also write to Crosman Arms Company at 980 Turk Hill Road, Fairport, New York 14450, or call the service department at (716) 223-6000. Crosman will make modifications to eliminate the possible problem at no cost to the consumer.
