Taylor Water Technologies Recalls Phosphate Reagent Bottles Due to Chemical Burn Risk

Taylor Water Technologies is recalling about 10,000 Phosphate Reagent #1 bottles sold with test kits. The sulfuric acid bottles lack required child-resistant packaging, posing a risk of severe chemical burns.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recalled product contains sulfuric acid in non-child-resistant packaging, violating the Poison Prevention Packaging Act and creating a real risk of chemical burns and corrosive injuries. No injuries or illnesses have been reported, meeting the rubric criterion for 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.'

Plain-English summary

Taylor Water Technologies is recalling Phosphate Reagent #1 bottles sold individually and as part of Taylor Phosphate Test Kits (model K-1106). These test kits are used to measure phosphate levels in pools, spas, and aquariums. About 10,000 units were sold.

The recalled reagent bottles contain sulfuric acid, a corrosive chemical that must be packaged in child-resistant containers under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA). The bottles in this recall do not meet this requirement. The non-compliant packaging poses a risk of severe chemical burns to skin and eyes, and internal corrosive injuries if the acid is ingested.

The affected bottles were sold from August 2022 through August 2024 online at Taylor's website and other retailers, as well as in pool and aquarium stores nationwide. Individual reagent bottles sold for approximately $13, while test kits containing the bottles cost around $56.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bottles and secure them away from children. Taylor Water Technologies will provide free replacement bottles and disposal guidance. Contact Taylor Water Technologies at 800-837-8548 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday-Friday), through the online contact form at taylortechnologies.com/en/content/contact-customer-service, or visit the recall information page on their website. No injuries or illnesses have been reported.
