The Lye Guy Recalls Sodium and Potassium Hydroxide for Packaging Defects
The Lye Guy is recalling sodium and potassium hydroxide products because the packaging is not child-resistant and labels violate federal hazardous substance requirements.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (chemical burns) where injury has not yet been reported, which aligns with the High severity criteria for products posing a risk of harm without reported illness.
Plain-English summary
The Lye Guy is recalling approximately 32,000 units of sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide products. These products were sold in 32 oz plastic jars with a white continuous thread closure and a white label featuring the company logo and product name. The recall is due to the failure of the packaging to meet child-resistant requirements under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA) and violations of the Federal Hazardous Substance Act (FHSA) labeling standards.
The non-child-resistant packaging poses a risk of chemical burns and irritation to the skin and eyes if accessed by children. Additionally, the product labels omit the word "poison" and other mandatory information required by the FHSA. The Lye Guy, of Pennellville, N.Y., sold these products online at TheLyeGuy.com from November 2008 through February 2021 for between $6 and $9. No incidents or injuries have been reported.
Consumers should immediately store the recalled products in a safe location out of sight and reach of children. The Lye Guy is contacting all known purchasers directly to provide free replacement child-resistant packaging and new labels. Consumers can also contact The Lye Guy at 315-436-6560 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, email [email protected], or visit www.thelyeguy.com for more information.
