Ecoxall Sodium and Potassium Hydroxide Products Recalled for Non-Compliant Packaging
Ecoxall is recalling sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide products sold on Amazon because the packaging does not meet child-resistant requirements under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. The products pose a risk of chemical burns and skin or eye irritation.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves caustic chemicals (sodium and potassium hydroxide) that pose a risk of chemical burns and skin/eye irritation, particularly to children due to non-compliant packaging. Although no injuries have been reported, the hazard is significant and the risk is direct given the failure to meet child-resistant packaging requirements for inherently dangerous substances.
Plain-English summary
Ecoxall, based in Brighton, Michigan, is recalling approximately 440 units of sodium hydroxide caustic soda beads and potassium hydroxide flakes. The products were sold exclusively online through Amazon.com from August 2022 through October 2022 for about $15 each.
The sodium hydroxide product is sold in a two-pound plastic sealable bag with a red label reading "99% Pure CAUSTIC SODA BEADS Sodium Hydroxide/Lye" (UPC 81009340058). The potassium hydroxide product is sold in a two-pound plastic sealable bag with a blue label reading "POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE FLAKES" (UPC 855126007125). These products are commonly used for soapmaking and cleaning.
The recall was issued because the packaging is not child resistant as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA). Additionally, the product label violates the Federal Hazardous Substance Act (FHSA) by omitting the word "poison" for these poisonous chemicals. The non-compliant packaging poses a risk of chemical burns and irritation to the skin and eyes. No injuries have been reported.
