Midwest Lubricants Sodium Hydroxide Recalled for Unsafe Packaging
Midwest Lubricants is recalling about 3,000 units of Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda Beads) because the packaging is not child-resistant and the label lacks required hazard information. The product poses a risk of chemical burns and eye irritation.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a caustic chemical (sodium hydroxide) in non-child-resistant packaging, which creates a clear risk of serious harm (chemical burns and eye irritation) to young children. Although no illnesses have been reported, the hazard is substantial and directly affects a vulnerable population. This meets the "High" threshold for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Midwest Lubricants, of Fredericktown, Missouri, is recalling Midwest Lubricants 99% Pure Sodium Hydroxide Caustic Soda Beads sold in white 10-pound bottles. The product was distributed online through MidwestLubricants.com and Amazon.com from January 2020 through June 2023 for approximately $44 per unit.
The recalled product contains sodium hydroxide, which federal law requires to be packaged in child-resistant containers under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA).
