Gun Safes with Failing Biometric Locks Recalled for Unauthorized Access Risk
About 60,000 Awesafe biometric gun safes can fail to lock, allowing unauthorized users to open them. No injuries reported, but consumers should immediately stop using the biometric feature and use the key instead until they receive a free replacement.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Score 3 (High) applies because while 71 incidents of biometric lock failure have been documented, the source explicitly states no injuries have been reported. Per the rubric, risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported score at most 3.
Plain-English summary
This recall involves Awesafe biometric gun safes imported by Shenghaina Technology Co. Ltd. The biometric lock on these safes can fail without warning, allowing unauthorized users to open them and access the firearm stored inside. The CPSC has received reports of 71 incidents in which the biometric lock failed to secure the safe. No injuries have been reported to date.
About 60,000 of these safes were sold between August 2019 and December 7, 2022, at Walmart stores nationwide and online through Amazon.com and Walmart.com for approximately $130. The safes are black, fit two pistols, and display "Awesafe" branding on the front.
Consumers who own a recalled safe should immediately stop using the biometric feature and instead use only the key to lock the safe until they receive a free replacement. To receive a replacement, contact Awesafe at [email protected] or visit awesafeus.com/RECALL for instructions on safely disabling the biometric reader and sending a photo of the disabled reader. Once a replacement safe is received, the original safe should be discarded in accordance with local laws.
