The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and its supplier, Adstar Inc., are recalling approximately 400,000 Project HomeSafe gun locks. These locks resemble bicycle cable locks with a red cable and black padlock, featuring "PROJECT" and "HOMESAFE" on red vinyl bands. The locks were distributed free of charge by law enforcement agencies nationwide from September 1999 through October 2000 as part of the Project HomeSafe (now Project ChildSafe) campaign.
The recall is necessary because, under certain conditions, the locks can open without the use of a key. This defect can give unauthorized access to a firearm. The NSSF and Adstar Inc. are unaware of any instances of unauthorized access by adults or children resulting from this defect.
Recipients of the recalled locks should call the NSSF to receive a free replacement gun lock with an improved locking mechanism and a thicker braided-steel cable. Until the replacement is received, consumers should keep the original lock installed on the firearm. Consumers are reminded to never put a gun lock on a loaded gun and to take extra precautions to ensure the gun is secure.
