MouTec Biometric Firearm Safes Recalled for Unauthorized Access Risk

The CPSC is recalling about 2,200 MouTec brand biometric firearm safes because the biometric lock can be opened by unauthorized users, posing a serious injury hazard and risk of death. One incident involved a 6-year-old opening the safe, though no injuries have been reported.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The hazard presents a documented risk of serious injury and death from unauthorized access to stored firearms. One incident of unauthorized access has been reported, involving a child, even though no injuries resulted. This meets the Severe threshold for a risk-of-harm product where the potential for serious injury or death is explicit and has been demonstrated in practice.

Plain-English summary

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling MouTec brand Biometric Firearm Safes model number QCJJ01, distributed by BBRKIN (Ningbo Moyumaoyi Co. Ltd., China) and imported by Jomani International Inc. of Monterey Park, California. Approximately 2,200 units were sold exclusively on Amazon.com from September 2021 through February 2023 for between $170 and $400.

The safes are gray steel units measuring about 13 inches by 14 inches by 15 inches, designed to store firearms and valuables. They have one shelf and can hold approximately 5 firearms. The brand name "MouTec" appears on the front, and the serial number is on a label in the lower right corner. The recalled units have serial numbers ranging from SQC202121000 through SQC202247603.

The biometric lock on these safes can be opened by unauthorized users, creating a serious injury hazard and risk of death. The firm received one report of an incident in which the safe was opened by an unauthorized user—a 6-year-old child. No injuries have been reported.

Consumers should immediately stop using the biometric feature, remove the batteries from the safe, and use only the key when storing firearms. Contact BBRKIN by email at [email protected] or online at www.securitysafe.store/recallreplacement to receive a repair kit or free replacement safe. Consumers will be asked to disable the biometric reader and email a photo of the disabled reader to receive a replacement.
