Plain-English summary
Petzl America Inc. is recalling approximately 14,850 low-stretch kernmantle ropes in the United States, with an additional 2,500 sold in Canada. These ropes are designed for professional applications such as work-at-height, technical rescue, and industrial use, as well as recreational activities including climbing, caving, and mountaineering. The affected ropes feature a nylon core and polyester sheath and include specific models such as Axis 11mm, Parallel 10.5mm, Vector 12.5mm, Segment 8mm, Ray 12mm, ASAP AXIS 11mm, Push 200 9mm, Club 200 10mm, and JAG Rescue Kit. Only ropes with serial numbers ranging between 18 C 0000000 000 and 20 H 0000000 000 are included in the recall.
The recall is due to a defect where the rope may have a deep cut or tape securing two ends of the rope together. This condition can cause the rope to fail, posing fall and injury hazards to the user. No injuries have been reported in connection with this recall. The ropes were sold at GME Supply, Karst Sports, and industrial and recreational stores nationwide, as well as online at gmesupply.com and karstsports.com, from March 2018 through July 2020 for between $200 and $1,200.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ropes and inspect them for a deep cut or tape connecting two ends of the rope. If either defect is found, consumers should contact Petzl America for instructions on receiving a free replacement rope. Petzl America can be reached toll-free at 877-807-3805 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT Monday through Friday, by email at [email protected], or online at petzl.com.
