Petzl GYM, PANDION, and PANJI Climbing Harnesses Recalled for Fall Hazard

Petzl America is recalling three climbing harness models because they can be worn backwards, allowing the rope or carabiner to attach to a non-weight-bearing strap instead of the proper attachment point. This can cause users to fall from height and suffer serious injury or death.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: One report of serious injury from a fall has been documented. The hazard directly poses risk of significant injury including paraplegia, and the source explicitly references potential for death from the identified defect, meeting the criterion for Severe classification.

Plain-English summary

Petzl America, Inc., of Salt Lake City, Utah, is recalling about 22,000 GYM, PANDION, and PANJI climbing harnesses sold in the United States. The recalled models are the GYM harness (Model No. C032AA00), the PANDION harness (Model Nos. C029AA00 and C029AA01), and the PANJI harness (Model No. C028AA00). These harnesses were used by climbing gyms, adventure parks, guide companies, and individual consumers.

The recalled harnesses can be put on backwards, and the rope or carabiner can be attached to a non-weight-bearing leg loop elastic band instead of the weight-bearing attachment point. This defect places users at risk of falling from height and sustaining serious injury, including paraplegia or death. One report of serious injuries from a fall has been reported in the United States.

The harnesses were sold online and in stores at KarstSports, PeakTrading, Backcountry, OmniProGear, Moosejaw, and other outdoor equipment stores from January 2019 through May 2024 for between $59.95 and $69.95. Serial numbers are printed on a label inside the harnesses. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled harnesses and contact Petzl America for a free repair at 877-807-3805 (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. MT), or visit www.petzl.com/US/en/Operators for more information.
