Apple Recalls Three-Prong Wall Plug Adapters Due to Electric Shock Risk
Apple is recalling three-prong wall plug adapters from its World Travel Adapter Kits because they can break and expose metal, posing an electric shock risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (electric shock) where injury has been reported (two consumers medically evaluated), but no deaths or serious injuries are documented, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products.
Plain-English summary
Apple Inc. is recalling approximately 814,000 three-prong AC wall plug adapters included in Apple AC World Travel Adapter Kits sold in the United States. An additional 81,000 units were sold in Canada. The affected adapters were sold from January 2003 through January 2015 at Apple stores, other home electronics stores, and online at Apple.com for about $30. The kits were also sold with Mac computers and iOS devices.
The recalled adapters are white with no letters on the inside slot where they attach to an Apple power adapter. They were made for use primarily in the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Hong Kong. The hazard is that the adapters can break and expose the metal portion, posing a risk of electric shock. Apple has received six reports from other countries of adapters breaking and consumers receiving shocks. Two of these reports involved consumers who were medically evaluated and released without need for further medical treatment. No reports of incidents or injuries were reported by U.S. consumers.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled wall plug adapters. They should contact Apple at 800-275-2273 anytime or online at www.apple.com to receive free replacement adapters. Redesigned adapters are white with gray on the inside portion that attaches to the power adapter.
