What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has been reported (laceration requiring stitches), but no deaths or severe injuries are documented, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for reported injuries without fatalities.
Plain-English summary
Coravin Inc. is recalling all Coravin 1000 Wine Access Systems sold in the United States and Canada. The recall involves approximately 65,000 units in the U.S. and 640 units in Canada. The system uses a hollow needle to penetrate wine bottle corks to dispense wine without removing the cork. The products were sold at Coravin.com, other online retailers, and wine shops from July 2013 to June 2014 for about $300.
The recall is due to a laceration hazard. The system can cause wine bottles to break during pressurization. Coravin has received 13 reports of bottles breaking. One incident resulted in a bottle bursting into four pieces, causing an injury involving two chipped teeth and a laceration that required stitches. Four other incidents involved bottles cracking and leaking, and eight involved bottles breaking into two pieces.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled wine access system. They should contact Coravin for a free repair kit that includes a neoprene wine bottle sleeve to contain broken glass and updated instructions and warnings. The system should not be used on wine bottles with damages or flaws. Consumers can contact Coravin toll-free at (844) 267-2846 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.coravin.com.
