Safety 1st Toilet and Cabinet Locks Recalled for Lock Failure

Dorel Juvenile Group (DJG) Inc. is recalling approximately 183,000 Safety 1st Sure Fit toilet locks (models 48003 and 48103) and 685,000 Safety 1st cabinet slide locks (models 12013 and 12014). The recall was initiated because young children can unexpectedly disengage the toilet locks, gaining access to water and posing a risk of drowning. Additionally, children can disengage the cabinet locks, allowing access to dangerous or unsafe items stored inside.
DJG has received 110 reports of toilet locks that did not adequately secure the lid, including eight reports of children under two years old who disengaged or broke the lock. The company also received 278 reports of cabinet locks failing to secure cabinets, including 71 reports of children between eight months and five years old who disengaged the locks. In one incident, a 13-month-old boy swallowed toxic beads from a craft kit after accessing a cabinet; the child was hospitalized, observed overnight, and released the next day.
The recalled toilet locks were sold at Bed, Bath and Beyond, Burlington Coat Factory, Great Beginnings, Home Depot, Target, Walmart, and Amazon.com from January 2005 through April 2012 for between $8 and $20. The cabinet locks were sold at the same retailers from January 2000 through April 2012 for between $2 and $11. Consumers should immediately remove the recalled locks and store dangerous items out of reach of children. They should contact DJG for a free replacement lock of a different model.
