Dorel Juvenile Group USA is expanding its recall of approximately 31,500 Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gates, model number 42111. This expansion follows a previous recall of 100,000 units in February 2009. The affected gates were manufactured before December 20, 2008, and are white metal with a gray handle and a motion sensor nightlight.

The recall is due to a hazard where the hinges that hold the stair gate in place can break. If the gate is placed at the top of the stairs, this failure poses a fall hazard to children. No injuries have been reported in connection with this defect.

The gates were sold nationwide at mass merchandise and juvenile product stores, including Babies R Us, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart.com, and other online retailers, from January 2005 through July 2009 for about $60. Consumers should stop using the recalled gate immediately and contact Dorel Juvenile Group to obtain a free repair kit. Consumers should not return the stair gates to retail stores.
