BRK Brands Inc. is voluntarily recalling about 18,000 First Alert® True Fit™ Safety Gates in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall involves model CSSG1 gates manufactured between October 1996 and May 1997. These expandable, pressure-mounted child security gates are made of off-white plastic with a gray handle and fit openings from 28 to 47 inches wide.

The recall is being issued because plastic parts of the gate, including bumpers, hinges, and handle pieces, can break off into small pieces. This creates a potential choking hazard to young children. BRK has received over 200 reports of these parts breaking, but no choking injuries have been reported.

The gates were sold nationwide beginning in October 1996 for about $35 at retailers including Toys R Us, Hills, and other stores. Consumers should stop using these gates immediately and call BRK toll-free at (888) 777-5599 to obtain a free replacement gate. Gates made beginning in June 1997 are not involved in this recall.
