Big Lots Recalls Five-Light Floor Lamps Due to Shock and Heat Hazards

The lamps stand about five feet tall and feature a gunmetal or chrome metal pole with five adjustable lights. The recalled units have dark plastic or multi-colored double plastic shades and use standard incandescent or CFL bulbs. These specific lamps are identified by the model number "G-1843-5" on the underside of the base and SKU numbers 612007239, 612007829, or 612008982 in the instructions. Lamps using candelabra bulbs (model G-1844-5B) are not included in this recall.

The recall was initiated because the wiring for the light sockets can become exposed, creating a risk of electric shock. Additionally, using the recommended standard 40-watt light bulbs can generate excessive heat, which may cause the double plastic shades to melt. The company has received four reports of melting lamp shades, but no injuries have been reported.

These lamps were sold at Big Lots stores nationwide from April 2010 through November 2011 for between $30 and $50. Consumers should immediately stop using the lamps and return them to a Big Lots store for a full refund.
