What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire and burn hazard with reports of overheating and smoke, but no injuries or property damage have been reported, fitting the criteria for a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Environmental Lighting Concepts is recalling approximately 1,560 OTT-LITE TrueColor floor lamps. The recalled lamps are sand-colored, stand about 4 feet tall, and feature flexible gooseneck arms used for reading or craft work. The recall is due to a defect in an electronic component inside the plug, which can overheat and present a fire and burn hazard to consumers.

The company has received three reports of the plugs overheating, including one instance where a plug produced smoke. No injuries or property damage have been reported. The lamps were sold nationwide from November 2000 through December 2000 for about $170 at craft, hobby, and fabric stores, including Hancock Fabrics.

Consumers should stop using the recalled floor lamps immediately and unplug them. To obtain a free replacement, consumers should contact Environmental Lighting Concepts toll-free at (800) 842-8848 between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday. The recalled lamps can be identified by labels on the stand and shade, and the electronic ballast plug bears the model number DMBLH-18W or DMBLP-18W.
