What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural defect causing overheating, smoke, and melted plastic, which poses a significant fire and burn hazard. Although no injuries or property damage were reported, the potential for fire and burns from a consumer electrical product meets the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
OTT-LITE Technology of Tampa, Florida, is recalling 226 units of the '10,000 Lux Light Box' that simulates natural sunlight. The white units, which measure 24 inches high, 12 ½ inches wide, and 3 ¾ inches deep, were sold by Natural Options Inc. of Nashotah, Wisconsin, via their website and mail order catalog from November 2002 through June 2004 for approximately $400. Some units may feature a small label on top reading "Nu-Yu Light."
The recall was issued because the light boxes can overheat around the socket where the bulb fits. This overheating can result in melted plastic and smoke, posing a fire and burn hazard. Five customers reported that their light boxes produced smoke and returned the units with burn marks and melted plastic in the socket area. No injuries or property damage have been reported.
Consumers should stop using the recalled light boxes immediately and unplug them. To obtain a full refund, consumers should call OTT-LITE Technology toll-free at (866) 421-5181 between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. (ET), Monday through Friday, or visit www.ott-lite.com to arrange for the return of the product.
