Plain-English summary
Big Lots is recalling large and small round citronella tabletop torches that burn liquid fuel. The large torches feature a steel fuel container covered in multi-colored glass in a mosaic pattern, measuring about 10 inches in diameter and 5 inches high. The small torches have a multi-colored glass fuel container with a metal and wire stand, measuring about 5 inches in diameter and 5½ inches high. The products were sold at Big Lots stores nationwide from March 2013 through June 2013 for between $8 and $20.
The recall is due to fire and burn hazards. Once lit, the glass citronella table torches can flare up and emit burning lamp oil onto consumers and property. Big Lots has received 20 reports of liquid fuel erupting from the torches with high flames. These incidents included two serious injuries involving second and third-degree burns, seven minor burns, and property damage in all reported cases. One serious injury involved burns to the legs and abdomen, while another victim received burns all over the body while attempting to extinguish the flames.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled torches and return them to any Big Lots store for a full refund. The large torches are identified by item #DC12-21111 and the small torches by item #DC10-20160, printed on a yellow label on the bottom of the large torch or a hang tag on the small torch.
