Child Craft Stationary-Side Cribs Recalled for Entrapment and Strangulation Hazards

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling Child Craft brand "Crib 'N' Double Bed" full size stationary-side cribs with dowel. The recall affects between 40,000 and 50,000 units sold at Babies 'R Us and other stores nationwide between January 1998 and June 2009 for between $600 and $650. The cribs were manufactured by Child Craft Industries, Inc., which ceased operations in July 2009. The "Child Craft" name was sold to Foundations Worldwide Inc., which did not manufacture or sell the recalled cribs.
The hazard exists because the stationary side of the crib can be assembled upside-down while still appearing correct. If installed this way, a hazardous five-inch gap forms at the top of the crib. Infants or toddlers can become entrapped in this gap, leading to entrapment, strangulation, or other injuries. CPSC has received four reports of children becoming entrapped between the dowel and the crib's stationary front side. In two reports, the child was trapped by the head and in danger of being strangled; in the other two, the child was trapped by the arm.
Parents and caregivers should immediately examine these cribs to determine if they have been assembled properly. The gap between the front and back sides of the crib and the dowel should be no more than two and three eighths inches (2 3/8"). If the gap is greater than 2 3/8", or if the barrel nut is visible at the top of the side rather than the bottom, the side has been installed upside-down and needs to be re-assembled.
