CPSC Recalls Generation 2 Worldwide Drop Side Cribs Due to Entrapment Risk

CPSC is recalling approximately 500,000 Generation 2 Worldwide and ChildESIGNS drop side cribs because the hardware can break, allowing the drop side to detach and create a space where infants can become entrapped and suffocate.

What this means for you

Highest-severity recall. Risk of serious injury or death is documented or strongly suspected. Stop using the product now and follow the agency's instructions.

Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly reports three infant deaths resulting from suffocation, which meets the rubric criterion for a Critical severity score (5) due to known fatalities.

Plain-English summary

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling approximately 500,000 full-size and portable drop side cribs manufactured by Generation 2 Worldwide of Dothan, Alabama, and sold under the "ChildESIGNS" brand. The recall includes cribs where the name "Generation 2 Worldwide" appears on a label on the headboard or footboard, and some where "ChildESIGNS" appears on the teething rail. These cribs were sold at numerous local furniture and retail stores, including Buy Buy Baby, Kmart, and Walmart, for between $60 and $160.

The hazard involves the crib's plastic hardware, which can break and cause the drop side to detach from a corner of the crib. When detached, the drop side creates a space into which a child can roll and become entrapped between the drop side and the crib mattress, creating a risk of suffocation or strangulation. Additionally, the mattress support can detach from the crib frame, creating another hazardous space for entrapment.

CPSC reports three infant deaths associated with these cribs. In July 2007, an eight-month-old in Newark, Ohio, suffocated after becoming entrapped. In October 2003, an eight-month-old in Richmond, Indiana, suffocated under similar circumstances. In September 2002, a six-month-old in Staunton, Virginia, suffocated after becoming entrapped. Generation 2 Worldwide went out of business in 2005.

CPSC staff urges parents and caregivers to stop using these cribs immediately and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Consumers should not attempt to fix these cribs. For more information, call the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772.
