Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling Child Craft brand drop-side cribs manufactured between 2000 and 2009. The recall involves specific model numbers using a particular style of drop-side hardware. The "Child Craft" name appears on a label on the crib's frame, identifying the place of manufacture as Salem, Indiana, or New Salisbury, Indiana. These cribs were sold at retailers including Babies R Us, Sears, Burlington Coat Factory, Target, and various specialty stores nationwide between January 2000 and July 2009.
The drop-side hardware can fail, causing the drop-side to detach from the crib or fall to the dropped position. When the drop side detaches, even partially, it creates a space in which an infant or toddler can become entrapped and suffocate or strangle. Additionally, when drop-side hardware fails or disengages, an infant or toddler can be injured by falling out of the crib. CPSC has received seven reports of the drop side failing. In one report, a child became entrapped in the gap created by the failure. In another incident, a child fell out of the crib and suffered bruises to the head when the drop side disengaged.
Child Craft ceased operations in July 2009, and a remedy is no longer available. CPSC staff urges parents and caregivers to stop using these cribs immediately and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Consumers are instructed to destroy and discard these cribs and not to attempt to fix them.
